Hi Alec my second stage is very easy to breathe from but whenever I turn my face straight down looking at the sea bed I get free flow. Should I adjust the second stage like you have just shown or should I adjust the IP of the first stage (diaphragm type) ?

I’ve been chasing leaks on a pretty old suit for months. Every time I find one I fix it and uncover a new one. Great way to learn drysuit repair though! I’ve almost done them all. The seam leak was the most interesting. No leaking air from in to out, using the air test you described, but water still entered multiple points of the seams while diving. How!? Microscopic one way valves? Increased pressure of water?

A leak for me seems to be most often be a failing neck seal. To a new dry suit diver it may be hard to tell a front of the neck seal leak from a chest valve leak.

6:46 I have a question about your Aqualung ? scuba knife where can I get one I need one pretty much exactly the same as this the only difference I think is the pamel is more of a teardrop shape and not round like yours . long story short my dad used to have one and he died when I was 13 and this knife was one of the things I used to play with as a kid and really brings back from memories of my dad but unfortunately when we moved house it got lost and I am searching for a replacement one any ideas where I can find one as I say it is exactly the same as yours but from what I can see the panel is slightly different

It's a damp suit on the best of days usually it's the neck or wrist seals not fitting right

Did You tube share the algorithm with you? How did you know I was just watching a bunch of Drysuit valve videos recently? There was a problem with the exhaust valve on my wife's suit so I bought the Valve removal tool to check it out. Turns out the rubber port came unglued from the suit and was deteriorated (only 2 years old) so I had to buy a new rubber port and glue it in. Problem solved and she has a dry arm. My suit on the other hand had a leak from the seam and needed professional repair.( again only two years old less than 20 dives on it) also I tend to leak from the neck seal because my head is always on a swivel.🌊🔍

Nice info you can use a friend in the suit instead of soda bottles 😅 but don’t spray is face to much with the soapy water 💦 😅 😊

Greasing works for a whole host of issues with these. I have to grease mine up before the weekend since i had unrestricted air flow after connecting. Luckily my dive buddy does a bit of boxing and was able to punch it to stop the flow. Sadly, it took me a bit longer to get a flow of air into my lungs. Didnt help him shouting, "right in the kisser."

Very professional and simple plus educational You mention that the Hydro test is every 5 years Unfortunately In Australia the most over governed over legislated diving industry in the world I am not sure if it is the aim of the government to destroy the recreational diving industry in Australia Many dive shops are closing in Australia not due to safety but excessive bureaucracy I personally have been a Dive Instructor since 1983 I no longer teach diving in Australia I am sure the diving industry in America is as safe or safer than Australia Its a shame we have great diving If you are interested to see what we dont want for the diving industry in other parts of the world have a look at To show you how absurd this legislation is A recreational SCUBA Instructor must have a Commercial Diver medical form a dive physician Imagine if you had a dive school like I did with 50 cylinders and they have to be hydro tested every 12 months plus an eddy flow test For reference www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/your-industry/diving-and-snorkelling/diving-laws

Hey Alec amazing video explanation! I was thinking if you could do a video in the future, about Dacor's Modular system 1st stages.

Stick with your guide, don't make everyone have to listen to a noise maker just because you saw a fish... I would never use one underwater... Have trouble, head up, don't have problems... Shut up and let us enjoy the dive. The bc beep is actually useful if in trouble but tank slappers and shakers are often misused and are annoying on a dive.

Please post more long videos, we love these in dept information sessions.

I was always Amazed watching the Divers of the 50's and 60's Throwing the Tanks over their head when donning. I have a Broken Collarbone and Tendonitis(Flares up at times) that prevents me from doing that.

12:38 that would only be helpful if you're diving vertically for some strange reason. if you're in proper trim, your buddy would not see your safe 2nd on your chest.

Helo Alec. I have been noticing Lots of DIY Mini Scuba Tank Fills, Hookah units on RUclips. Most of them from the last couple of years. Just waiting to see how many Injuries are caused but them. Breathing Gas here in the US is Grade E. I have a Nomad unit I use to fill my Spare Air 6cf. I am also using additional Filters. Including Charcoal. I can get it Legally filled with my PADI OW Card. It takes longer to drive to the shop than to fill it.

I've watched this a few times and the one piece of information that i feel is missing is the funtion of the second stage of the regulator in modern single hose setups. In the middle of the video it mentions that the first stage provides you with gas at 150psi plus ambiant pressure, but you don't notice because of ambiant pressure on you and your lungs. This is not so. It provides gas at 150psi plus ambiant pressure to the second stage, not your lungs. The second stage then provides gas to your mouth and lungs AT the ambiant pressure of the water at the depth of the second stage regulator (in this example 12.99psi freshwater 13.35psi salt water at 30ft (14.7psi at 33ft or 10m). So if you are in proper trim (face down or up) your second stage regulator is at the same depth as you lungs and delivering air AT the same ambiant pressure exerted on your lungs and everything feels normal (13.35psi). Breath in breath out. Salt water psi per foot is 0.445 (fresh 4.33psi/ft). If you are face down with regulator deeper in the water column than your lungs it will deliver air at a higher pressure than the ambiant pressure surrounding your lungs and inhaling air is easier.... BUT exhaling is sligtly harder. Conversely if your second stage is at a shallower depth than your lungs (face up or body positioned vertically in the water) it delivers air at a pressure that is lower that the ambiant pressure on your lungs (0.445psi/ft of depth difference between the 2nd stage reg and the bottom of your lungs), making it harder to inhale, BUT easier to exhale. This demonstrates why neutral level trim in the water is beneficial becaue both inhaling and exhaling are all at the same pressure as the ambiant pressure on your lungs. Face down or head down tilt will make it easier to inhale, bht more difficult to exhale. Face up or head up trim (sitting upright or vertical in the water) will be harder to inhale but easier to exhale. This all applies to systems where the second stage is in your mouth, rather than behinde your head.

Hello Alec , love this channel . I have been wondering about this , but my experience is , like with the others , is the opposite, I find it harder to breathe on my back , facing the surface . My theory is , when on our back facing the surface , the air inside the 2nd stage wants to go up , so will end up pushing the 2nd stage diaphragm outwards , making it more difficult to “suck” the diaphragm in , hence making it a little more difficult to breathe . Just my thoughts .
